Director's Note
I really enjoy this track, every time I hear it. For those who are wondering why there are a total of three Tail Cave tracks on this project, it's because after years of no one touching that track, three people submitted a first WIP within a week. I held an open competition as to who could make the best track, and I felt that this was clearly the best of the three, both in fitting into the genre guideline and in the journey it takes you through. I'm particularly a fan of the drum programming and effects.

Director's Note
Everyone who knows me knows that I love it when people combine elements of chiptunes in other musical forms. I also love everything that Ben's ever done. I'm a big fan of how he combined several styles and dissimilar instrument choices to make a really nice piece.

Title - Arranged by:
Level 99 / prophetik
Director's Note
I am always afraid to take on the main theme of a game. Usually, it's considered the crowning achievement of nostalgic expression for that particular outing of the game, and if the remix isn't either epic or stunningly original, you're toast. This was no exception – it sat for months before someone had the guts to give it a shot. Stevo wrote the guitar parts as a WIP and asked me to fill in a bit. I did what I could, and he finished the mastering. It sounds exactly like what I've come to recognize as Stevo's style – interesting acoustic guitar work combined with that signature guitar sound.

House - Arranged by:
Iggy Koopa
Director's Note
In terms of the original chiptune, House probably ties with Tal Tal Heights as my favorites from the game. I think that Iggy Koopa did a really nice job expanding a track that's basically just one short phrase into an expansive piano arrangement.

Animal Village - Arranged by:
prophetik
Director's Note
This one requires a little explanation, and I think a lot of people aren't going to 'get' it right off the bat. I'm an enormous fan of minimalism in general and the composer Steve Reich in particular, and a lot of music aficionados are going to recognize that a significant portion of this 11-saxophone arrangement comes from Reich's New York Counterpoint, for eleven clarinets. The concept behind this track was to take that piece and adapt it to the incredibly minimal original tune (just two measures looped over and over). The idea is that, by adding more and more instruments playing their own rhythmic ideas, eventually the theme from Animal Village comes out. It is a very liberal remix, yes, but after you've listened to it five or six times on repeat, I think you'll start to get where I was going with this remix.

Ten19
Director's Note
This track comes from the awesome Ten19, the guy who volunteers at Rainwave for the OCR radio station. It's very atmospheric, and I feel it really captures the vibe of what's going on at this point in the game. For what's basically his first remix ever for any project, I'd say he did a pretty good job.

Dream Shrine - Arranged by:
The Joker
Director's Note
One of the oldest tracks on the project, this track features some awesome strings and choral samples that evoke a really interesting soundscape. The title loosely translates to Unexpected Awakening, and the feeling you get is definitely described by waking up in the middle of the night from a vaguely disturbing dream. There's some really advanced synth work, too, which help carry it out to the end.

Tal Tal Heights - Arranged by:

Director's Note
Everything I said for "Lucidic" applies here. I particularly love the bass and lead programming and synth work. Originally, bLiNd had offered to do some work on this track, and when he had to cut back on the projects he was involved in, I was worried that there would be a significant dropoff in talent between him and whoever took over for him. I was so pumped when I saw that Ben wanted to take a shot at remixing this one that I basically just told him that it was his before I even heard a WIP of the track. I think it turned out quite well.

Sound Test
Director's Note
Sound Test is an acquaintance of mine from undergrad who has since gotten involved with writing original music for a variety of mediums. His music is really, really raw – in that he explores a ton of unique and interesting sounds and timbres that are pretty far out from the norm. His music is always very complex, with a lot of techniques that remind me of 20th century composers like Ives. You can always hear a little Jet Set Radio in there, too. This is his first project.

Mysterious Forest - Arranged by:
Dj Mokram
Director's Note
When Dj Mokram approached me about doing this track, I was torn. I loved his initial ideas, but I was wary of letting someone with so little experience (at least, experience that I was aware of) take a track that was as popular as Mysterious Forest was. He proved my trepidation wrong with his first WIP. This probably is the most upbeat of all of the tracks on the project, but I love his combination of rock and orchestral elements, mixed in with the ethnic lead (I believe it's a dizi, but I could be mistaken). The Daft Punk reference is excellent, as well.

Artem Bank
Director's Note
Artem Bank, known as redshojin on the OCR forums, is a newcomer who pounded out a great remix in a relatively short amount of time. I'm a big fan of how he took a one-chord original and turned it into something much more creative and listenable so effortlessly. I used his concept as inspiration on my Catfish's Maw track. His solo work in the middle section reminds me of one of my favorite remixes of all time, "Days of Summer v2" (from my last project, Radical Dreamers).

Face Shrine - Arranged by:
prophetik
Director's Note
Ranking as the longest-running track on the project, I recorded the saxophone parts on 11/5/2005 and finished rendering the orchestral parts on 8/26/2010. The piece originally was just piano, strings, and saxophone, but the arrangement was sketchy at best. I expanded it later with the winds, brass, and better samples. The original track is played in its entirety by the harp throughout most of the track, and the melody that I wrote on top of it is just something original that I created to fit into what's going on most of the time. This is my first project remix, ever, even before the track I did for the Pokémon project.

Director's Note
This is another oldie but goodie, completed back at some point in 2006. Dafydd was critical to the continued success of this project. He provided the FTP space for us to use (and the passwords when I continually lost them) for the entirety of my running the project, without which I'm certain I'd have lost every single file ever sent to me. Thank goodness for him.

Xenon Odyssey
Director's Note
Yes, Bobby Keller does more than just make signatures in MS Paint. This arrangement is an excellent jazz-inspired version of Mabe Village, and Xenon Odyssey does a nice job of giving the song a Gershwin-esque feel. I'm a big fan of the pacing for this track – one of my biggest issues in remixing is that I tend to get to the good stuff too soon, and I felt that the remixer here does a great job of pacing the main body of this remix well.

Lashmush is another newcomer to the community, compositionally speaking. If I'm not mistaken, this is his first project, too. He did a nice job of taking one of the most pathetic source tunes I've ever heard and making something cool and atmospheric out of it. I had six people contact me with interest about this track between the beginning of 2009 and now, and Lashmush is the only one who actually created something worthwhile out of this. Props, man.

This is another old track, from the second iteration of the project. Rexy's probably one of the most prolific project remixers, thanks in large part to her ability on the piano. This is a very long and meandering reminiscence on the Eagle's Tower theme, that explores a lot of different textures over the length of the track.

Catfish's Maw - Arranged by:
prophetik
Director's Note
Catfish's Maw is another of those tracks that's particularly atmospheric, and doesn't really work well outside of the game itself. There's just so little musical content there that no one really wanted to work on it, with good reason. I picked this track up on a whim, and finished this remix three hours later. I rarely do music this ambient, which made it fun. Of course, Omnisphere helped a lot, too.

This is another of Sound Test's really interesting and creative remixes. It includes him doing some dramatic reading, and singing as well. I met Steve in the Men's Choir at Houghton College, so this is fitting. This track is a journey of sorts, and leads you through the content at the end of the game. It contains spoilers, if you haven't played it yet. Don't say we didn't warn you.

prophetik / Fishy
Director's Note
Another old track, I picked this up in 2005 as a second track after 'finishing' my Face Shrine remix. I actually wrote this remix in theory class, without listening to it before sending the chords and structure off to PriZm. Oops. He was the original guitarist on this one (see the bonus track Villa), but thanks to a changing job description, Pascal was unable to re-record the guitars to fix a few mistakes that were in the original recording. Fishy graciously stepped in, learned PriZm's parts, and recorded his own version to help me out. This is another track recorded ages ago, as I believe that the date on the original recording for me was mid-November, 2005.

sloopygoop is another Houghton grad (Sound Test's roommate, actually) who primarily deals with chiptunes. I couldn't put this track on the project, since it doesn't even come close to fitting any of the genre requirements, but it's just too darn awesome to not get the recognition it deserves. It's super long, and explores a variety of styles (waltz, funk, rock, downtempo…), and generally just is eight minutes of awesome.

As I said in the description for "House of Frogs," PriZm and I did this track in late 2005 for the second version of the project. He was unable to re-record it to fix the few errors in the accompaniment part, though, so I wound up asking Fishy to finish the track with me. It's still awesome, though, and the guitar solo has a totally different feel, so I figured some people would like to hear some more PriZm.
